The challenges of living in the midst of a pandemic continue to manifest themselves for our parish and local community. With cases back to our highest level, it is imperative that we work as Christians for the weakest among us by mitigating spread, even while continuing in responsible ways to embrace the most important aspects of being human: faith, relationships with family and friends, and pursuit of the good (both personal and common)...

Saint Thérèse will have her feast day this week! Hopefully you received our mailing about how we will honor God’s “little flower." If you did not, the letter and novena prayer can be found on our website. Please join us, whether in person or via YouTube livestream, at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 1st, to celebrate our patroness with an evening of prayer. It will probably last about one hour (or a tad more). We will also have a bonfire afterwards, starting around 8:15 PM. Bring snacks for yourselves and we will have a socially-responsible evening of joyful fellowship with each other!

I subscribe to Gilbert, the magazine of the American Chesterton Society, which is now in fact an official church association of the faithful known as “The Apostolate of Common Sense.” I love the insightful, fun-loving and timely collection of writings found therein, whether from GKC's (Gilbert Keith Chesterton) treasure house or from his contemporary fans. They always seem to find more than enough to give a useful look at today’s world.

The Holy Spirit was clearly trying to make an impression on us all that evening, deciding not to be subtle this time! It was really amazing. Sacraments usually don't have such external signs, but they are always powerful, like the power of a tiny seed that can one day be an orchard, as was mentioned in the homily. Where did you see God this past week?

I am excited to be the sponsor for my niece's Confirmation this week. I will get to travel back to my home parish for the event, which is always a blessing. I have not made it home much the past six months because we are trying to let mom and dad stay in a good, low-risk quarantine. I am looking forward to seeing the family again. About three weeks ago we were together for a family vacation.

As busy as we are with so many things pulling us and pushing us, it is easy to get swept away in our lives. If we don't live our lives on purpose, we can end up living them on accident. Sometimes this can yield drastic consequences, like hiking without a compass and finding yourself lost. Our faith, and our unique vocation, is a compass that the Lord gives us. Our parish has been working on its compass - trying to discover the voice of God speaking over and through the noise to a deeper calling. Over the past year our parish staff has been working from a new mission statement...

While I am away on vacation, I thought it might be nice to share a bit of what I’m reading. This book, titled From Christendom to Apostolic Mission, was published last year by the University of Mary and outlines the new cultural landscape we must work within as a church in the United States. The main point is two or more generations ago we had a basic Christian “current” that guided our culture; now that is no longer the case, so we have to swim against the current...

This weekend I am away for a family wedding and vacation. I pray that my housemates, Fr. William Orbih (of the diocese of Abuja in Nigeria) and Seminarian Brian, will take great care of the liturgy and your sacramental needs while I am away. I am looking forward to my cousin’s wedding (pray for her and her husband) and the week together in the mountain region west of Denver...

This weekend remembers Independence Day, when the Declaration was signed in 1776. Pardon me as I reflect on some of the deep questions of life regarding independence, autonomy, free will, etc. The truth of the dignity of the individual is a hallmark of the modern era. This is a good thing. However...
