On Saturday, May 6, 2023, seven young parishioners received Holy Communion for the first time. Their excitement was palpable. The joy of their families and friends who came to celebrate with them was boundless. After receiving the body and blood of Christ for the first time, they remained kneeling in front of the altar as everyone else at Mass received communion.
Spending three days of retreat with them, together with Alexis and Brenda, who both prepared them for the sacrament, was a blessing. What I immediately noticed about them was their sweet and tender love for Jesus.
They might still be too young to understand the mystery they participate in. What matters, however, is their love for Jesus, whom they encounter and receive in the sacrament.
This love for Jesus is at the heart of our mission as Christians. Therefore, whatever we do out of love for Jesus is a contribution to the mission of the Church.
May we continue to learn from children what it means to love Jesus tenderly.
